INTERVIEW: MAX HOFFMAN

Good Loco photography services Marrickville is proud to introduce our interview series ’Shooting Stars’; a quick chat with some of Australia’s best visual arts creatives, who have been kind enough to pass on some tips on where to start when looking for photoshoot studio hire.

Today we’re fortunate enough to chat with Gold Coast-based filmmaker, Max Hoffman, who specialises in weddings, events, sport, music videos and commercial video work. He’s worked across various music video and touring video productions with artists such as Bootleg Rascal and Nocturnal Tapes, and the likes of brands Glidecam, RipIt Performance, Vanuatu Tourism and many others.

We’ll largely talk about how to find a good range of options for your wedding photos beyond just punching in ‘wedding photography Sydney’, ‘wedding photos Sydney’ and ‘wedding photos Marrickville’ and who can benefit from using Good Loco photography services Marrickville.

Questions:

1. Thank you for taking the time to catch up with us at Good Loco photography studio Marrickville. We’ve touched on a brief introduction, but could you please tell us a bit more about what you do exactly?

My main goal with wedding videos and essentially every other video I create for clientele is to create visually appealing cinematic clips that have a strong emotional impact through particular techniques. For example, a country themed wedding will have certain shot styles, music, a specific colour grade and I will use vintage lenses whereas a traditional wedding will look much more commercial. I typically attend the wedding from start to finish; aiming to simply be a fly on the wall to capture the day in its entirety. I also spend a lot of time talking to family members to get an idea of who to focus on within the film.

2. Finding the right venue for your wedding photos can be quite overwhelming too. What advice would you give here to our friends in Sydney? Is it just as easy as punching key words like ‘wedding photography Sydney’, ‘wedding photos Sydney’ and ‘wedding photos Marrickville’ into Google? Are there other platforms that might be more helpful?

These options are a great way to find wedding venues. However, another great way to find the right venue is to contact other professionals involved in the event such as wedding photographers, videographers and planners, as they usually already have a relationship with venue hosts. There are also websites dedicated to event venues which are worth looking into, depending on your location.

3. From looking at our website, what type of shoots would be best suited at Good Loco photography studio Marrickville / videography studio Marrickville?

The Good Loco Studio has a comfortable setup with good assets to shoot music, product or fashion videos. Comfort is key when working with artists and clients, as it enables you to more accurately depict what is desired. The corner of the Good Loco videography studio Marrickville is perfect for product-based photos or clips and would be great for green screen work, paired with the lighting.

4. How important do you think video content is within the current climate? Have you seen an increase of business with more companies wanting to exploit the digital realm further?

Video content has never been so important. As a client trying to sell your product or brand, having that extra level of communication is imperative to reach customers, fans and viewers whilst maintaining your online presence. Video has been the best marketing tool for a long time and is even more effective now that people are spending more time inside.

5. What is your favourite type of work you do and why?

Wedding and music videos are by far my favourite type of work because of the creative freedom both subjects bring. The process of creating something visually appealing is always a buzz and I’m always keen to pass the work onto the client. Weddings are consistently straightforward and comfortable to shoot, as they are mostly set up and unfold accordingly. Music Videos are dependant on the style of music, especially when it comes to collaborating with the artist and director to formulate a compelling story and theme.

6. For the novice / DIY videographer, what setup of gear is considered essential?

I always recommend investing in lenses and lighting before buying camera bodies. My best gear investments so far have been lenses and a glidecam (non-battery powered stabilizer) which are also the longest lasting and far from going obsolete. I’d say start with a camera you are comfortable with and a kit lens, then once you are ready to take the next step upgrade your lens. I made the mistake of chopping and changing camera bodies and brands to the point where I owned thousands of dollars’ worth of gear but still hadn’t made any real growth to my inventory of gear.

7. If you were to create a script for a music video at Good Loco videography studio Marrickville, what would it look like?

I’d have a 50% performance, 50% story-based music video. A house party or small club scene would work well, with the artist performing and mingling with the crowd. I’d shoot a lot of B-roll with a dance/neon lighting setup. It’d be worth developing a storyline that follows two separate audience members; narrating what the track lyrically conveys. Although, it all depends on the song itself and what the artist wants to portray. I’d love using the backdrop corner at Good Loco videography studio Marrickville with a unique lighting setup.
