INTERVIEW: TALYA JACOBSON
Interview introduction:
Good Loco photoshoot studio Sydney is proud to introduce our interview series ’Shooting
Stars’; a quick chat with some of Sydney’s best visual arts creatives, who have been kind
enough to pass on some tips on where to start when looking for photoshoot studio hire in
Sydney
Today we’re fortunate enough to catch up with Sydney-based music journalist, Talya
Jacobson. Talya lives and breathes indie music. She’s passionate about shining a light on
brilliant emerging artists and achieves this via shooting, reviewing and interviewing them.
She’s also the director of new video-based series, ‘The Indie Groove’, which programs some
of the most exciting performances and interviews from outstanding Aussie artists.
We’ll dive into topics that cover what to look for when considering a professional photo
shoot, how to find a good range of options beyond just punching ‘photoshoot Sydney’ into
Google, and many other helpful bits of information.
Questions:
1. Thank you for taking the time to catch up with us at Good Loco photoshoot studio
Sydney. We’ve touched on a brief introduction, but could you please tell us a bit more
about what you do exactly?
Hey! Great to catch up. Yes, so the simplest way to say it is that we want to get people’s
music out there in a fun and entertaining way. So, we get up-and-coming artists to come in
and we do a short interview, play some games, and get them to perform. It’s the best way
we know to get their music out online and have those who haven’t heard their music get to
know who’s behind the tunes a bit more. Plus, it’s ridiculously fun.
2. When people are looking for a video / photoshoot studio hire to create content, what
kind of things should they be looking for and taking into consideration?
Space and lighting are the two main considerations. White infinity walls like the one at Good
Loco are always good because you can add your own personal touch easily. For us, we
brought in some props and used some of Good Loco’s awesome props to spice things up!
Also, easy access into the studio and set up space is important too.
3. Finding the right space can be quite overwhelming too. What advice would you give
here? Is it just as easy as entering in a key phrase like ‘photoshoot Sydney’ into Google?
Are there other platforms that might be more helpful?
Super overwhelming! Reviews are helpful and word of mouth as well. Going into Facebook
groups and talking to like-minded individuals about what they’ve used in the past can open
your eyes to new spaces and opportunities. Scouting places is important too. If pricing is an
issue, look around for competitive price points and see if you can get a bit of a discount for
first time use!
4. When you’re looking at a professional photo shoot for your projects, what type of
features and services are you mainly looking for?
As I mentioned before, a large and efficient space with good lighting is super important.
Cleanliness is something to look out for, as well as overall professionalism and unique
qualities. Good Loco had a bunch of fun props, great equipment, and even a “chill zone”
outside, how great! Another significant feature is the type of people running the studio. You
want to associate yourselves with fun, laid back people who want to get in on the fun!
5. As someone who is familiar with our space, what type of shoots would be best suited at
Good Loco professional photo shoot Sydney?
I honestly believe you could do a whole range of shoots at Good Loco including
photoshoots, music videos, performances, interviews, games and more. Even corporate
shoots would go great in this space!
6. As Good Loco professional photo shoot Sydney has just launched, we’re quickly noticing
the depth of aspiring talent that stretches across our great city. Do you have any favourite
emerging photographers and / or videographers that people should be checking out?
Good question! I’m a photographer myself so I’m just going to take this opportunity to do a
little plug (www.shotbytalz.com). Alexander Robinson (@alexrbsn) is an incredible
videographer and film director, and I would 100% recommend him for any video shoots.
Geoff Zhang (@gzeepix) is great as well, and Jade (@weightlessinthevalley) is sick. Georgia
Moloney (@moloneygeorgia) and Jess Gleeson (@jessgleeson) will always be my favourite
photographers, but they’re pretty well known now!
